Kongens Nytorv - an area with many attractions

In the area around Kongens Nytorv, you'll find several of Copenhagen's acclaimed attractions.

The area includes sights such as the Fotografisk Center at Gammel Strand 48, focusing on fine art photography, and Kunsthal Charlottenborg at Nyhavn 2, which hosts exhibitions and is home to several art institutions.

From Kongens Nytorv, you can see Nyhavn. The harbor dates back to 1673, and back then, the area was characterized by merchants/sailors, courtesans, and festivities. Many of the quirky colorful houses still stand today, and the area has become a popular spot with charming restaurants and cafes.

From the harbor, you can take a canal tour and learn about historical Copenhagen from the water. It's a delightful break when exploring the city.

Copenhagen's largest shopping street, Strøget, culminates at Kongens Nytorv. Here, you'll find some of the most exclusive stores. If you turn right into some of the first side streets from Strøget, you'll also discover a wealth of beautiful extravagant shopping opportunities.

Walking from Kongens Nytorv down Bredgade, you'll encounter exclusive galleries and antique shops. Further down the street, you have the Marble Church on one side and Amalienborg and Amaliehaven on the other.

From the fountain at the Amalienborg quay, you can see in a straight line across the canal the controversial Opera House designed by architect Henning Larsen. Back on Kongens Nytorv, you'll find the Royal Theater, which was built in 1748.

In 2008, the Royal Theater was expanded with the Det Ny Skuespilhus on Kvæsthusbroen, designed by architects Boje Lundgaard and Lene Tranberg. Young people and students receive a 50% discount on all performances.
